Insights From An Insider With Carr Crowe, PGA General Manager

Local and traveling golfers love to research courses before playing them, whether it is to gain some local knowledge or to set an expectation before their upcoming round. Below is an interview with Kenny Cashwell who shares some valuable insight about the property, its most talked about holes and the signature dish/drink to consume at the 19th hole.

How Does Your Course Differ From The Others In The Area?
Sequoyah National stands out because of the sheer beauty of the course and the surrounding mountains. The views while playing are absolutely awesome.

For someone who has not played the course in awhile, has there been any new changes/renovations to the course or property?
For our friends who have not played the course in a while the biggest change will be in the course conditions. Superintendent Brannon Burnes and his team have done a remarkable job creating consistent year round excellence. Another improvement is the new golf shop in Harrah's Cherokee Casino; we have a hitting bay and putting greens as well as a variety of outstanding merchandise. I invite everyone to come and check out the facilities.

What is your course's answer to Amen Corner? (Describe your best/hardest 3 back/back/back holes)
Our version of Amen Corner are holes 10-12. The 10th which is named "Fire's Relative" is a long uphill par 4 that demands length off the tee and a well place second shot. Hole #11 named "Long Man" is a downhill reachable par that has a small green for the gambling golfer. Hole #12 is named "Trail of Tears" and it is a long and arduous par 5 which plays uphill to an large but undulating green. The secret is to simply survive one shot at a time. Errant shots invariably cost the golf on these 3 holes more than most.

What is your course's claim to fame, or is there a little known fact that golfers should know about the property?
One little known fact that makes Sequoyah National unique is that we are owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians who also own the Harrah's Cherokee Casino and the Cherokee River Valley Casino in Murphy North Carolina.

What tournaments/events have you (recently) hosted or will be hosting?
This year we are looking forward to hosting the Carolinas PGA National Car Rental/Harrah's Pro-Am. This event draws club professionals and amateurs from across the state for two days of competition each spring. In addition to various local charity events we are once again hosting the Sequoyah Classic which is a benefit tournament for the Cherokee Children's Home. The public is invited to sign up for this two day, two man event which is played in September.

Besides golf, what other amenities do you offer if a golfer wants to spend most of the day at your facility?
In addition to golf most of our guests make their way over the Harrah's Casino for dining and entertainment.
