Getting To Know: Duke University Golf Club
An Insightful Interview With Ed Ibarguen, PGA Director of Golf
The Duke University Golf Club's championship golf course is open to the public all year round. Since 1957, it has been regarded as one of the top university golf courses in the United States. Originally designed by the late Robert Trent Jones Sr., the legendary golf course architect. IN 1993, his son - the 'U.S. Open Doctor', Rees Jones, renovated one of the best layouts in North Carolina. A strategic masterpiece that has hosted many golf championships including two Men's NCAA Championships (1962 & 1957). The golf course was ranked #2 university golf course in the country following that last NCAA championship in 2001.
The 'getting better every day' Duke University Golf Club is under construction this summer and will reopen on September 3, 2013 after another extensive upgrade. The greens will be converted to super smooth and fast Champion ultra-dwarf Bermuda grass. This renovation will include all new sod at every green surround, new tee tops, and lush fairways.
Amenities are extensive at this facility:
29 acre practice range, two large putting and chipping greens, the Washington Duke Inn runs one of the best golf course food outlets - delicious menu for golfers and visitors alike, full fleet of 60 GPS equipped Club Car golf cars, rental club sets number over 50 - men's graphite, steel, and left-handed, women's graphite and left-handed. The fully stocked golf shop at the golf club was awarded the 2013 Carolina's PGA Section Merchandise operation of the year. The club is also a finalist for the PGA National Merchandiser of the Year award.
