Description
In 1919, a movement was started overnight to organize and build a Gastonia Country Club and golf course. The first day, a self appointed committee of two men, C. D. Gray and Joe Separk, secured subscriptions of $50,000 in stock in the original corporation called the Gastonia Country Club. The businessmen, lawyers, and doctors of Gastonia bought this stock without argument; no man approached refused to subscribe. The smallest subscription was $500 and the largest was $1,000. A site was selected off New Hope Road, through which Wilkinson Boulevard now runs. Construction began almost immediately.
