From atop the East Coast's highest sand dune, the views, particularly of sunrise, can be spectacular. Whether visitors to Jockey's Ridge, a 426-acre park, choose to climb the dune or just to admire it, they will likely appreciate the numerous outdoor wonders that North Carolina's Outer Banks so stunningly displays.

A visit to the Wright Brothers National Memorial, which honors the men who made human flight possible, grants visitors a glimpse back in time, and the landmasses that give the region its name-Roanoke Island and Hatteras Island, for example-can launch all sorts of outdoor adventures.

Mariners and fans of lighthouses will be in their element in the Outer Banks, since five lighthouses dot the region, including the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick beacon in the country, standing 208 feet tall. And after going sailing, trying a stand-up paddleboard or pursuing big-game fish in the waters touted as the "Billfish Capital of the World," golfers will find nine championship courses along the 130-mile stretch of sandy scenery called the Outer Banks.

Although nearly impossible to choose poorly among the area's courses, golfers with limited time may want to play Kilmarlic Golf Club and Nags Head Golf Links. The former is stellar enough to have hosted the North Carolina Open in both 2004 and 2009, so it almost certainly will prove more than adequate for the games of vacationing golfers. And Nags Head is a true links course that has earned four and a half stars from Golf Digest, which called the holes that skirt Roanoke Sound, "among the most beautiful in the eastern United States."
